Zirconia vs. Titanium Dental Implants

Zirconia vs. Titanium Dental Implants Photo

Nowadays, there are two types of dental implants: zirconia and titanium. Both types of dental implants are FDA approved and safe, but what are the differences between the two?

Many patients wonder which option is the best fit for them. If you’re wondering why you should choose a dental implant at all, click here to learn the benefits.

Titanium Implants

Titanium implants are the grandfather of dental implants and were introduced in the mid 1980s. Titanium has been proved to be strong and lightweight, and is often used surgically in other areas of the body, like a knee replacement. It also fuses very well with human bone, through a process called integration, and has a very high success rate.

Zirconia Implants

Some patients may prefer to use a Zirconia implant if they have an allergy to nickel or are in need of a dental implant in their smile line. Most zirconia implants are very aesthetically pleasing because their shade mimics the shade of a natural tooth root.

There are many positives to Zirconia implants, but they haven’t been around nearly as long as titanium – making the information that we have about them limited. There is also a cost difference between the two types of implants.
