A lot of our patients are curious when we bring up needing a Dental Cone Beam CT scan prior to their implant placement. So what is this scan, and more importantly, why would you need one?
What is a Dental Cone beam ct (cbct)?
Dental cone beam computed tomography (CT) is a special type of x-ray equipment used when regular dental or facial x-rays are not sufficient. It uses a special type of technology to provide three-dimensional images of dental structures, such as bone and nerve paths.
Why Would I Need This Scan?
This scan shows things that a typical full mouth radiograph would not – such as bone width and nerve paths. Having this scan gives Dr. Thanik the ability to create a more precise treatment plan. Utilizing software, Dr. Thanik can digitally your implant to ensure proper sizing and placement.
What Are the Benefits of a Dental Cone Beam CT Scan?
- The focused x-ray beam reduces scatter radiation, resulting in better image quality.
- A single scan produces a wide variety of views and angles that can be manipulated to provide a more complete evaluation.
- Cone beam CT scans provide more information that conventional dental x-ray, allowing for more precise treatment planning.
- The Cone Beam CT scan is painless, noninvasive and accurate.
Dr. Thanik purchased a CBCT scan machine to ensure that our patients can visit our office and receive a comprehensive treatment plan. During your initial implant consultation, you will have the opportunity to take a CBCT scan – ensuring that you won’t need to come back for an additional diagnostic visit.
