What is itand why would you need it?
What is a crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening is a common surgical procedure in which gum tissue or bone (or both, in some cases) is removed to expose more of a tooth.
Why would I need crown lengthening?
- You have a cavity or decay below the gum line
- Your tooth has broken below the gum line
- Your tooth needs a crown but does not have enough structure to retain it
If you have a cavity or broken tooth beneath the gum line, it may not be accessible to your general dentist. Crown lengthening can help to expose the area and make it easier to reach.
In some cases, a dental crown needs to be placed on top of a tooth. If there is not enough structure remaining, crown lengthening may be necessary to expose more of the structure.
Esthetic Crown Lengthening
Some patients complain of a “gummy smile”. If this is the case for you, it may be because you have excess gum tissue. Esthetic crown lengthening can help remove that excess tissue. This will expose more of your tooth and give you a natural, esthetic smile.
