What Is Periodontics?
Periodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that deals with the tissues surrounding your teeth, such as gums, jawbone, and teeth roots. A periodontist is the gum specialist who focuses on treating conditions that affect these vital tissues, like periodontal disease, gum recession, and bone loss. We are specifically trained to help patients maintain a healthy mouth and restore full functionality. If you suspect any problems with your gums or teeth-supporting tissues, it is essential to visit a periodontist who can diagnose and provide appropriate treatment.
Services We Provide
At our facility, our top priority is ensuring our patients have healthy gums and teeth. We offer a comprehensive range of services aimed at achieving this including:
- Laser Periodontal Surgery
- Dental Extractions
- Dental Implants
- Gum Grafting
- Crown Lengthening
- Sedation Dentistry
Dr. Thanik is the most experienced periodontist in LANAP surgery in the Pacific Northwest. He was the first trained specialist to utilize the Periolase to treat periodontal disease in this area. He has performed thousands of successful surgeries over the last two decades. He is also one of a handful of certified clinical instructors at the Institute of Advanced Laser Dentistry in California.
Dr Thanik has trained hundreds of surgeons from all over North America on the techniques of laser surgery to treat periodontal disease. He is currently on faculty at OHSU School of Dental Medicine where he instructs surgical residents in the dental clinic.

What’s the Difference Between Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease?
Gingivitis is a condition that affects the gums, resulting in bleeding and inflammation. Although it may seem like a minor concern, if left untreated, it can progress to periodontal disease, which can compromise your gum health and even your jawbone structure.
Symptoms of gingivitis include:
- Swollen gums
- Bad breath
- Tender gums
- Receding gums
- Bleeding while brushing
Once gingivitis progresses into periodontal disease, the symptoms can include the following:
- Painful chewing
- Loose teeth
- Sensitive teeth
- Bleeding gums
- Gumline recession
Periodontal disease is a serious condition that can greatly impact your overall health. If you are exhibiting symptoms, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Our Portland periodontics facility is here to help you address any concerns and provide comprehensive care for your dental health. Our team of experienced professionals is dedicated to supporting you in improving your oral health and overall well-being.
Can I Have Dental Implants Instead of Dentures?
Dental implants are a great option for those looking for permanent teeth replacements. Instead of dealing with the hassle and discomfort of dentures, dental implants can save you time and money in the long run. With proper care, they can last a lifetime, providing a natural-looking and comfortable alternative.
If you're considering dental implants, contact us today to learn more about our periodontics services. We'll be happy to answer any questions you may have and help you make the right decision for your dental health.
