Healthier Gums in 2023

The new year is a great time to start fresh and make new resolutions for yourself. This year, why not add “taking care of my gums” to that list? As periodontists, we see many individuals allow gum care to fall to the wayside, leaving them susceptible to gum disease and other oral health issues.

By sticking to these tips and committing to good oral habits this year, you’re sure to have a healthy smile through all of 2023!

TIP 1: STICK TO YOUR REGIMEN

If you already have a gum care routine that you’re happy with, great! New year or not, it’s important to stick to what works for you. That being said, if you’re looking to make changes or improve your oral hygiene habits, the new year is a perfect time to start.

No matter what changes you make, the most important thing is to be consistent with your gum care routine. That means:

  • Brushing at least twice a day
  • Using an alcohol-free mouthwash
  • Flossing thoroughly at least once a day

We know how challenging it can be to stick to a new year’s resolution — but with determination, a commitment to a healthier smile, and the help of the Progressive Periodontics, we believe you can do it!

TIP 2: EAT GUM-FRIENDLY FOODS

What you eat can have a significant impact on your gum health. This year, make an effort to incorporate more gum-friendly foods into your diet.

Foods that are high in fiber are great for your gums because they help to remove plaque and bacteria from teeth. Some examples of high-fiber foods include:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Beans and legumes
  • Dairy products
  • Fish

In addition to being high in fiber, these foods are also packed with vitamins and minerals that are essential for gum health. So, not only will they help keep your gums clean, but they’ll also help them stay healthy and strong.

TIP 3: STAY HYDRATED

Staying hydrated is important for your overall health — and that includes your gum health. When you’re properly hydrated, your saliva flow increases, which helps to remove bacteria and food particles from your mouth.

Aim to drink six to eight glasses of water per day. You can also get hydrated by eating foods with high water content, such as cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, and lettuce.

In addition to drinking plenty of water, you can also help keep your gums hydrated by using a gum-specific hydrating mouthwash. This type of mouthwash contains ingredients that help to soothe and protect your gums.

TIP 4: VISIT YOUR PERIODONTIST AND DENTIST REGULARLY

Even if you’re doing everything right when it comes to taking care of your gums, it’s still important to visit your periodontist and dentist regularly.

At your appointments, your periodontist will carefully examine your gums to look for any signs of disease or inflammation. If they do find anything, they’ll work with you to create a treatment plan that will get your gum health back on track.

Your dentist can also play a role in maintaining gum health. They can help to detect any early signs of gum disease and can give you tips on how to improve your oral hygiene habits.

Make your appointments now and stick to them!
